Dr.A.Hariharan and Dr.S.Surianarayanan have enormously  contributed to the LIS profession by establishing Society for the Advancement of Library and Information Science (SALIS). Dr.A.Hariharan, Head, Knowledge Resource Division, CSIR, SERC, Chennai and the Founder President of SALIS, will be superannuated in October 2015. Dr.S.Surianarayanan, Selection Grade Librarian, Sri Paramakalyani College, Alwarkurichi and Former President of SALIS was superannuated in May 2013. In this connection, a felicitation programme has been planned to felicitate both of them at Bishop Heber College, Trichy on Saturday, 26th September, 2015 for their dedicated and meritorious services to the LIS professionals.
Dr.A.Hariharan
Dr.A.Hariharan was born in Poigai Village, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu on 14th  August 1956. He holds Associateship in Information Science (AIS) awarded by CSIR, New Delhi and secured first rank. He was awarded Ph.D. in LIS by Annamalai University in 2009. He is currently working as Head, Knowledge Resource Division at CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai since 1993. He is the Task Force Committee member and Nodal Officer for the projects of NKRC and KNOWGATE (CSIR). Previously, he worked in INSDOC (New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai) and Ministry of Home Affairs, Chennai. He is the ‘Founder President’ of Society for the Advancement of Library and Information Science (SALIS). With his initiatives, SALIS chapters have been established at various places in India, to cater to the needs of LIS community. He has organized more than 100 conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. on various emerging topics of LIS and delivered lectures through SALIS. He was the Project Co-ordinator for the creation of ‘e-Learning Portal’ for ‘Information Literacy Competency Skills for South Asia' developed by SALIS and funded by UNESCO. He is the ‘Managing Editor’ of SALIS Journals. He has visited many countries including Germany and USA. He has contributed a lot for the automation of Public and Academic Libraries in Tamilnadu. Tamilnadu. He trained a large number of LIS Professionals. His present mission is to promote ‘Reading Habit’among the children through Vasippom Nesippom- a mass movement of SALIS, Digital SALIS – a digitizing all SALIS activities  and to establish ‘Public-Private Libraries’.

Dr.S.Surianarayanan
Dr.S.Surianarayanan was born in Elathur Village, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu on 20th May, 1955. He worked as a ‘College Librarian’ in Sri Paramakalyani College (SPC), Alwarkurichi, Tirunelveli District from 1979 and completed his service in May 2013. He introduced many innovative library services like overnight issue, Free online registration for competitive examinations and TNPSC exams, email, university question paper service, readers forum, etc. for the stakeholders of the institution. He was awarded Ph.D. in LIS by Annamalai University. He is an recognized Research Guide for M.Phil. and Ph.D. in various universities in Tamil Nadu. He has organized many seminars / workshops on LIS. He has served as Chairman / Resource person in various conferences / seminars. He has published more than 50 research papers in journals / conferences. He is an editor of a few LIS journals. He served as the Senate Member of MS University during January 2007 to December 2010. He is the recipient of AutoLib Tamilnadu Best Librarian Award’ for the year 2009 from SALIS and ‘Tamilnadu Best Librarian Award’ for the year 2010 from TLA. He is currently serving as the Coordinator of different academic activities such as the Coordinator of IGNOU special study centre 2535-D, Coordinator of Alagappa university Learning Centre, Admin incharge of Amar Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences and Principal of Sri Sathiya Sayee Institute of Computer Education and Training at Amar Seva Sangam, Ayikudy, Tenkasi. He is a good orator in Tamil and has published a few books.
Festschrift Volume
As a token of our goodwill and gesture to Dr.A.Hariharan (Dr.AH) and Dr.S.Surianarayanan(Dr.SS),  LIS professionals, teachers, students, scholars, friends, colleagues and well wishers are keen to bring out a Festschrift Volume to be released at the felicitation function. The main theme of the volume is “Library and Information Services: Growing with Technology”. It covers all the major components which are instrumental in the development of library and information services.

Excel to Koha Data Conversion

Data Conversion from Excel to Koha


— After generating the MS excel file from existing proprietary software , the next step was to convert the Ms excel file into MARC format that can be imported into Koha.

— To convert the Excel into MARC, the very efficient utility “MarcEdit” was used. MarcEdit is a free programme, which can do all sorts of cool stuffs with your Marc data.

First Step: Converting from Excel format into .mrk format

  •   First, we will convert excel format into .txt format. Screen shot excel file given below.




  •   Just open excel file then save as txt file. Screen shot of the txt file given below.



  •   Then, we will convert txt format into .mrk format. For this we will use MarcEdit.
  •   Now open it and select Add-ins-->Delimited Text Translator.
  •   Click Next when the following window appears.



  •   Locate your excel file by choosing the format Excel File(*.xls).
  •   Similarly, fill all the other entries such as Output File, Excel Sheet Name and check UTF-8 Encoded (if required) and Click Next.



  •   Now you will be prompted for mapping the fields to recognise the fields by standard marc format.
  •   You can customize Indicators and all other things.
  •   Similarly map all other fields and then Click on Finish.


Convert .mrk file to .mrc

  •   Next Select MarcMaker to convert .mrk file into .mrc format.



  •   Locate your input file and name your output file. Then Click Execute.
  •   And it will show you the Result.
  •   Finally we will import above created .mrc file into Koha.



Second Step: Data Migration to Koha:

  •   First login with Koha User ID and Password and get the main Interface of Koha. 



  •   Click on Tools in your Koha staff client
  •   Next Click on Stage MARC Records for Import 


  •   After this, choose your previously created .mrc file and click on Upload.
  •   You can also add comment about file and finally click on Stage For Import

  •   When the import is done, you will get a result something like this

  •   Next, click on Manage staged records.
  •   Here you can even change matching rules
  •   Click on Import this batch into catalog when you are done.

  •   After all the records get imported, check Status and it should read "imported“
  •   And within few minutes, we have imported all the records in Koha
  •   Now you can search the OPAC.

UGC has released a circular on the External Guideship (Supervisor who is not a faculty member of the University or its affiliated PG Colleges/Institutes) that would be in violation of UGC (Minimum standards and procedure for award of M.Phil./Ph.D.) Regulations. 2009.

All are requested to select the Guide keeping in mind the above circular.
