The Library & Information profession lost a formidable personality on 28th July, 2014. Prof. Arashanipalai Neelameghan was an international expert in the field of Knowledge Organization, Information Communication in Marginalized Communities, Concept Relations and Education & Training of Information Professionals. He was closely associated with Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library & Information Science. He retired as UNESCO/PGI Regional Adviser for Asia-Pacific. He was also a Professor and Head of Documentation Research & Training Centre, Bengaluru. He published seminal papers and books in various areas of Knowledge Organization and his contribution to the profession has been extraordinary. I had the good fortune of meeting him in connection with my PhD. I will always remember the occasion. My research guide suggested that since I was the first person to undertake a PhD in the area of Domain Ontology, I needed to have an expert opinion before I submitted my thesis. This was in 2007. I had set up an appointment to meet him at the Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS) office in Bengaluru at 11.00 am. I was running late for the appointment due to traffic and reached SRELS almost half an hour late. He immediately made me feel at ease and enquired whether I had my breakfast since I was coming directly from Mumbai. On replying in the negative, he arranged for the same. He said “You have your breakfast and in the meantime give me the copy of your thesis”. By the time I finished my breakfast, he was waiting for me in the Seminar room. He gave crisp comments and suggestions on how to present the conclusion part in a more effective manner. I was totally impressed by his command over the subject and his analytical skills. Later in 2010, I published a paper based on my PhD work in the journal Knowledge Organization with Prof. Neelameghan as the co-author. I felt blessed to be in such august company. I had another occasion to meet him during the 12th International ISKO Conference on “Categories, Contexts and Relations in Knowledge Organization” held at Bengaluru in 2012. I was presenting a paper and Prof. Neelameghan was the Chairperson of two sessions, presented two papers and also edited the Proceedings of the Conference published by Ergon-Verlag. Listening to him was a tremendous learning experience. Even in his Eighties, his enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge will always remain with me. Our profession has lost its link with Dr. Ranganathan. I pay my humble respects to Prof. Neelameghan and pray to God for everlasting peace unto him.
